El Mictlan
Is a fascinating concept from pre-Hispanic mythology that represented the destination where they believed the souls of the departed would journey to after death. It's a mystical realm where the souls of the deceased encountered nine distinct levels, each presenting unique challenges and obstacles. These trials were a crucial part of their spiritual journey before finally reaching their ultimate and peaceful resting place.
What role did the Xoloitzcuintle play in El Mictlan?
In the first level of El Mictlan, the departed souls would wake up in a powerful, flowing river. To cross this river, the deceased needed the assistance of a dog, specifically a Xoloitzcuintle. It was believed that treating dogs kindly in life was crucial because, upon reaching El Mictlan, these Xolo dogs would not help the souls of those who had been unkind to their canine companions.
